I am not sure if you recall, but my family moved from Northeast Pennsylvania to the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania area in August. My husband is a pastor and the Lord called us to the area to minister here. We had spent the last 10 years up north where Chris pastored a great church in the Northeast Pennsylvania area, but God impressed it upon our hearts that a change was coming. We spent about a year in prayer while discerning his call and trying to figure out what was next. It took some time, but it became very clear to us what we were to do. We relocated in August of 2013 to Lancaster County ans Chris accepted the call to pastor a new church. The church is full of amazing people and we are excited to live in community with them. Actually, Lancaster is my hometown and we have all of our family nearby as we never had before. God was so good to us. We are enjoying being near family and having them involved in our everyday happenings. It is such an unexpected blessing! We still own our home up North and are still trying to sell it, but that is another story for another day.
We moved into a rental home which we absolutely love. It is a townhouse with more room than we had which is great for having people over. I also have access to a nice garage in which to work…that was certainly on my short list! We are enjoying renting and our landlord is really super…a very kind Christian man. He has given us free reign to hang pictures and paint and the like. We feel like we can totally make this place our own which means a lot to me as I am always doing something around the house. And after all the stress of having our home on the market for a very long time, it is a blessing to rent and have no worries about home ownership (again, another day). It’s very nice to live in a home that doesn’t have a for sale sign on the front lawn. So, to make a very long story a bit shorter, when we moved in, we just put things in the right spots and I didn’t really take much time to really enjoy decorating and settling in to make it ours. When we moved in, the living room looked like this on Day 1:
Those were our sofas at the time and they were great. Very comfortable.
I wanted for a long to change things up, but because of our old house’s layout, I was sort of stuck with how things were. Same deal for colors too and I kept with the red theme. And I do love red! BUT I wanted to go lighter…more soothing with a rustic cottage beachy feel. That is more my style anyway.
So…I sold the sofa and loveseat set as pictured above and used the money to buy myself an Ikea sofa and Ikea sleeper sofa instead. I searched on Craigslist for many months to find what I wanted. I knew what I wanted and just had to wait it out to find what I wanted. I wasn’t settling. I also wasn’t going to pay full price as I just can’t bring myself to do that. I live life within a budget and I have learned to be thrifty and resourceful as a result. I found the sofa locally and the loveseat was found at a location about an hour away (both on Craigslist). I just love my husband and my brother-in-law as prior to Christmas, they took a truck and drove down to get it for me. I was very grateful for their willingness to help.
So I basically sold the old set and bought this used set for the same price I sold the couches for and didn’t spend a cent. I actually used the extra to purchase a new slipcover from Ikea for the sofa bed. Gotta love how that worked out!
I really wanted a couch without any pattern. Simple and neutral so I can change up the accessories often.
I also wanted white.
So you think I am nuts?
Maybe I am, but that is what I wanted.
For so long.
And yes, I have two children and a dog.
And I went with white.
I will talk more about this later as I know you all have opinions to share on this matter.
And you may even be a bit curious as to how it is all working out.
We can revisit that later on another post.
So, let’s get to my makeover already.
Sorry about the weird angle pics, but it can be hard to take pictures.
You may want to pay attention to the beautiful rug as you look at my pictures..hint, hint.
Remember the before pics?
How about the after?
My couches are from Ikea and they are the Ektorp series. I like the clean lines and washable slipcovers!
I sewed up those blue pillow and painted up the sweet end tables to coordinate with the room.
My curtains are from Walmart and I am so happy with them. They are Better Homes and Gardens brand and they fit my room perfectly.
I recycled the frames for my gallery wall from my daughter’s room. They were used in her horse gallery wall in the old house.
I used a variety of frames from a thrift store and spray painted them in the same color.
Such a cheap and cute project!
The lovely glass lamp is from Lamps.com. They were good to me.
I found this fun chevron throw from Tuesday Morning.
You know I love me some chevron!
The blue chest is a piece Chris and I purchased at an antique store in Gettysburg when we were first married. It just needed a little makeover!
The change is drastic…and welcomed. And I did it on a TINY budget.
And did you notice that awesome rug?
It is a Mohawk.
I adore it.
And I am giving one away!
Mohawk Home has offered to gift one of my readers with a 5 by 8 size rug of their choice (value up to $150)!!
