I wanted to shake it up a little…you know…do something different.
Simply because different is good.
It’s true.
I enjoy painting in neutrals – white, black, grey….those colors are always popular.
But I wanted to do something different.
I found the perfect candidate!
An adorable dresser – she was just the right size and shape for my new adventure.
Love her cute little legs, too.
So off we went!
I had been considering painting a dresser in yellow for a few weeks and I hemmed and hawed about it.
I guess my fear is that yellow is such a distinct color that is wouldn’t sell.
Deciding on my vision for a piece is always a process – there is a fine balance between creativity and painting what will sell.
Sometimes I shoot to sell fast and at other times, I want to throw caution to the wind and see how it goes and not let concern over selling a piece dampen my creative spirit.
The struggle is real.
I decided to go with my gut and paint her yellow.
I was feeling RISKY.
I chose to paint her in Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Mustard Seed Yellow.
It took a few coats to really get the paint to fully cover and begin to look more of a rich yellow.
I was a little nervous when I was working on it as I knew what I wanted. Fortunately she came around…especially after I sealed her in Miss Mustard Seed’s Hemp Oil.
How you finish a piece is so very important.
I think she finished well 🙂
I love her new look!
How perfect is she is yellow??
She is available for sale for $225 if you are local to my neck of the woods 🙂
Thanks for reading!

Love it. However, I don’t understand why you put such a low price on it. I have a good idea how much money you have in it. This just doesn’t leave very much for you. Certainly not enough when you see how much you receive per hour. After all, you are a craftsman and not many people can do what you do.
Thanks Laura!
Pricing pieces is tough – I generally have an idea of what I hope to get while taking into consideration the price of the piece, supplies and paint and labor to complete the piece. I appreciate your comments! I also strive to be reasonable so people can afford the pieces I do. That is important to me too 🙂 Where are you from and how much do pieces go for where you live? So interesting to hear more about this 🙂
I live in southern Illinois, fifty miles east of St.Louis,Missouri. This is a rural farming community of approximately 3200 people.
$350.00 would be my asking price, possibly settling for $325.00.
If you are doing this for personal fulfillment as the main reason, then I can understand your low prices. If you are doing this to make lovely and functional furniture available to people that cannot afford to pay more, then I don’t understand that. If you want to help needy people, I’m sure you are aware that you can do that in a much more effective way than using your time and efforts to provide affordable furniture for them. I wonder if they actually ‘could’ pay more, but you are too soft hearted to press them. I think there are people out there than can afford your pieces for what they are worth. You just have to find them.
After all, this takes time and energy away from your family, friends, church and community. If your family needs additional income, perhaps a part time job that pays more. You can always use your talent as a hobby or true charity benefit.
I realise that I don’t know your situation and that I’m rambling. I have been enjoying Embracing Change for quite awhile now. Laura
People can afford the pieces you do.
Beautiful job! May I ask how you distressed the edges? Is that antique wax or did you sand it?
Thank you
I generally use a sanding block for distressing – sometimes a piece of sandpaper wrapped around a block. For this piece, it is just distressing and no antique wax. Thanks for the email!
Great job! (I agree with Laura – priced too low. For my area anyway.)
Thanks so much!
Love this colour, I have a beautiful dressing table and draws and would love to have the courage to do this colour, if I’m brace enough I will send a pic.
I’ve inherited an old dresser with a mirror, that was my mother-in-law‘s, who passed away a month ago. Her favorite color was yellow and I would love to do it like this and keep it to pass down to my children and their children. Can you please share how you did this?
Thank you.
