One look and I was hooked.
Holy empire goodness.
I definitely hit the jackpot with this chest!
He was handsome.
I had to have this chest delivered as I had bought several pieces from the same fellow and my Jeep is only so big.
When he unloaded it, I was able to see how ginormous it was.
The chest stood to the top of my chin.
I know I am short, but geez, that is a big chest!
He was imperfect with peeling and chippy veneer, but I figured that would be a pretty easy fix.
Plus I love character.
I didn’t want a brand new piece, but a beautiful old one with great character.
So he was perfect in his imperfection if you will.
I couldn’t wait to get started on him!
I did a light sanding by hand all over the base of the dresser after I glued and secured some pieces of loose veneer.
All seemed great after that!
Those drawers…immense, solid wood and heavy.
This guy planned to stick around awhile.
They don’t make pieces like this anymore!
I mixed up some of my leftover Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paints in Kitchen Scale and Artissimo.
I love to make new colors with my milk paint.
Mixing is always fun and I have gotten some GREAT colors that way.
This one is one of those colors that I love…I will have to remember how I mixed these for other pieces!
I didn’t bother with the bonding agent on this chest as I wasn’t concerned with chipping.
If it did chip, that was ok and if it didn’t that was ok, too.
Having a whatever attitude is definitely a positive when working with milk paint as sometimes you can’t predict the outcome.
I painted on three coats and soft sanded the base of the chest out.
I used a heavier grit sanding sponge to distress out the edge of this piece.
I used Miss Mustard Seed’s Hemp Oil to seal it up.
I used some large wooden knobs from my hardware stash.
The top of the dresser was in nice shape so I decided to sand it down and refinish it in a deep, gorgeous, dark walnut stain.
A few coats of prestain, Minwax stain and then poly and the top was looking GORGEOUS!
I really loved the dark painted base with the rich wood top.
Isn’t he a stunner?
