Chippy White Empire

I spotted this gorgeous empire dresser at a YARD SALE.
A yard sale!
Can you believe it?

Chippy White Empire - Before - Embracing Change
I don’t know how it is in your neck of the woods, but finding good quality pieces of furniture at yard sales doesn’t happen often here.
Where I live, everyone and their Mother has taken up painting so competition is rough.
Lots of demand for pieces has killed the supply if you will.
It is F.R.U.S.T.R.A.T.I.N.G.
More than I could convey to you.

So….when I spotted this as I drove by I jammed on the brakes trying to park quickly and gracefully so the seller wouldn’t detect my excitement.
Man, I should play poker or something.
How I managed to hide by my joy is unknown to me.
I just can’t control it!~
I was stoked!
I purchased it and couldn’t wait to see how pretty I could make her!

I thought she would look pretty in white.
Chippy white milk paint that is.
Can’t do better than that!
I painted her up in Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Farmhouse White without the bonding agent added.
I was welcoming the chippies!
And boy, did I get the chippies!

I remember thinking oh my goodness, I think all this paint may chip off as I watched the paint  dry and flake.
Luckily, the chipping was perfect!
I sealed this piece in polycrylic as I needed to stop all the chipping an so it wouldn’t be too excessive.
I prefer finishing with wax or hemp oil, but sometimes it takes something stronger to stop the chipping.
I added some Hobby Lobby knobs I had in my stash.

Isn’t she pretty awesome now?

  1. Stacey,
I LOVE the choices that you make with each piece you paint. They seem to speak to you….this one is perfection! I also really appreciate the photos that you take. They show a wonderful level of detail. This is very helpful to me as I have often wondered if I am using the milk paint correctly. Is it too thin, too thick, should it crackle like this, etc….
So thank you for sharing not only the beauty of your pieces but helpful information too!

    Blessings,
    Trina

  2. Oh my goodness! I can’t believe you found an empire dresser at a garage sale! The garage sale Gods were certainly smiling on you. :D Beautiful makeover, as always. Thanks for sharing!

Did you spray or brush the polycrylic on? I have a VERY chippy dresser I’m finishing and added a topcoat to one drawer, but not sure it will be enough to get the chipping to the point where I don’t have to babysit it, you know? :)

Then want to finish up with antiquing wax over the top of the polycrylic. Just wondering if you brushed it on or sprayed it?
