This antique empire dresser was a major score!
I was thrilled to find such a stately beauty and with such amazing wood.
Empires make excellent finds and this one was no exception.
I knew I could make it even more beautiful again!
Plan A involved painting the base and refinishing the top with a dark stain.
I thought a contrast would look good on him.
Then…I felt a little guilty painting up those amazing drawers.
The grain was fantastic and I couldn’t get my head around it to just do it.
I hemmed and hawed a bit which is always a sign that I’m not entirely sold on my vision for a piece.
Well….I decided to go with yet another plan.
I just needed to save as much of that gorgeous wood as I possibly could.
I chose to paint the body in Miss Mustard Seed’s newest color in her line called Aviary.
I distressed it well then sealed up the base in Miss Mustard Seed’s Hemp Oil.
I sanded down the top as well as painstakingly sanded down the drawers to the gorgeous grain below.
I sealed the top in poly after I stained it and the drawers in Hemp Oil after I darkened them with the stain.
What do you think???
I added gorgeous cut glass knobs from D. Lawless Hardware.
Find them HERE.
Look at all that grain.
Man, it was a lot of work to get those drawers looking lovely again and it would have been so easy just to throw paint on them, but I am SOOOOO GLAD I didn’t.
Looking at them is all the reward I need to know I made the right decision.
This dresser is just so handsome.
The legs have me feeling a little melty inside.
Once I snapped these pics, I knew my Plan C was the best plan.
Sometimes what turns out to be a far cry from the original vision is indeed JUST what is needed.
